Had a great relaxing Sunday afternoon with Albert and his wife: I cooked the mustard-tomato-chicken curry and lemon rice and we played Machiavelli. Just relaxed, and though we don't see eachother enough it all felt really comfortable.
I decided not to go to the sea with carofant, because I'm swamped with worked and I was completely stressed out (in come the panicky tears), and I do regret it but I don't: I was hyperventilating and having nightmares, and now I have two entire days to catch up on my schoolwork, which is great.
Also: I have chocolates in the frigde. Mmm... chocolate.

Night of the Proms

Went to the Proms last night, and it was fabulous. It was everything I like about music: challenging, beautiful, engaging, clever and even funny.
The night kicked off with The Harlem Gospel Choir. I love gospel when it's sung a capella, and they did one such song but the mikes were up too loud, so that kind of failed to please me. It was impressive singing, but even impressive singing doesn't make I Believe I Can Fly any more bearable.
Then there was a 'classical comedy duo' called Igudesman & Joo, a Russian violin player and a Korean pianist, and I was a little sceptical beforehand but their first act already blew me away: they played somethingsomething by Mozart (when I figure out what it is, I'll let you know) but changed it from a A-mineur to an A-majeur and then a c-flat. Which made it sound like gypsy music. That was awesome, just to watch that work. They also did a little sketch on how to play Rachmaninov and something with an Irish jig (which was also pretty good musically), but the coolest thing was a version of I Will Survive with the orchestra. Brilliant.
The orchestra was Il Novecento, which is a pretty decend orchestra and - I was unaware of this - apparently even played with Björk once. Coolness. They played Ouverture 1812 by Tchaikowski, as well as a movement from Spartacus (the ballet), a waltz from Sleeping Beauty, a medley of James Bond themes (that was brilliant! I sat there thinking 'that's that movie, that's this one') and what Beethoven's 9th symphony (which was then thoroughly fucked up by The Harlem Gospel Choir by adding Joyfull Joyfull to it). Spartacus was accompanied by a ballet, but I'm not really into that and it was impressive either.

On the pop/rock side, there was Midge Ure or, as I know him since childhood, Ovijenna. He's the former singer of Ultravox, and thusly he performed my dad's favourite song 'Vienna'. It was majestic! Sadly, my dad was not there because my parents figured it would be too tiring for him (he's stilling getting chemo, the last one's scheduled for next week), and so I cried all through the song. As well as through Ouverture 1812, which I know he adores, and the James Bond stuff (because he's a big Bond fan). I couldn't help thinking: If things had been different, I'd be mourning him today; not just feeling guilty for seeing stuff he would have adored.
The special guest was Tom Helsen, who got to sing Sun In Your Eyes (behind the link) and a cover of Into Temptation by Crowded House (gorgeous btw). Tom Helsen is a local singer-songwriter type, but he's just very down to earth and cool, so I like him despite the general averageness of his music.
Not average but not likeable: Ed Unibrow Kowalczyk or He Who Communicates With His Divine Anus and Live. They were good: openend with a pompous version of The Dolphin's Cry, then did They Stood Up For Love so syrupy I almost vomited, then closed with I Alone (which was, I have to say it, amazing). There was an encore for Ed in the second half with the bucket of vomit called 'Overcome' (I told my godmother I really, really, didn't want them to sing that, so it figures they would), and SINÉAD O'CONNOR sang along in the chorus, but he didn't deign to even look at her. Pompous asshole.
SINÉAD O'CONNOR!!!! OMG!!! *screaming fangirl* She's a bit fat, and they've been at it for a weak so her voice was hoarse, but Troy was to die for. Just amazing! (Yes, I cried). Then she sang Dark I Am Yet Lovely off Theology, which is basically a verse from the Bible, but it was nice. She returned for Overcome and Nothing Compares 2 U (I never liked that song) but the main chilling Sinéad moment was during Simple Minds' show (who were great, btw). They opened with Sanctify (everyone happy), Waterfront (older people happy) and closed with Don't You Forget About Me (lalalalalalala everyone happy again). Inbetween was Belfast Child, which is one of my favourite songs ever. It's based on an old Irish parting song, best known as She Moved Through the Fair, and The Chieftains recorded a version of it on their The Long Black Veil-album, where they collaborated with rock artists and Tom Jones. SINÉAD O'CONNOR sings the song there, and so after the first verse is sung Jim Kerr bows down and suddenly it's SINÉAD O'CONNOR singing 'I dreamed last night that my own love came in'. MY GOD! I died. And got resurrected again immediately, obviously, but that was... wow. (More tears).
The whole show ended with Land of Hope & Glory (classic) and all the artists singing Imagine together (they always end with a Beatles-song).
Awesome.

Went to the Antwerp book fair, the biggest one in Belgium, yesterday; and spent waaaaay too much money. Here's the list of what I bought:
- Cup Cakes Parade =

- Curry's: a huge fucking book on Indian cooking. Yippie!
- Da's pas koken: Rijst, a cheapo cookbook about rice dishes, but it only cost me 3.50 and it has some truly stunning recipes, so...
- De Mocktail Bar is, yes, a cookbook for mocktails. Am I uncool or what?
- Douglas ADAMS: So long, and thanks for all the fish & Mostly Harmless, the final two installments on The Hitchhiker's Guide that I hadn't read yet.
- Eén God, drie religies is a comparative dictionary about the three abrahamic religions. So one lemma is not only explained, but explained for the three traditions. Looks like a really good work.
- Eichman in Jeruzalem (Hannah ARENDT), Dutch pocket version for only 15€. I finally have it! *cheers*
- Grijsgedraaid (Leo BLOKHUIS) is a book about music. It's a gift for my brother.
- Het postmoderne weten (Jean-François LYOTARD), or the Dutch translation of "La condition postmoderne - rapport sur le savoir", one of the basic books on postmodernism. It was 12.50, which is a bargain for a philosophy book.
- Interventions (Naom CHOMSKY). Hey, it was really, really cheap. I had to choose between God Is Not Great and this one, and I figured Chomsky fit better in my book case :D
- Markant Nederlands: Vademecum 3e graad: it's a course book for Dutch, and it has all the grammar and litterature info my fifth and sixth years are getting, hence the buy
- Project Algemene Vakken: Mensenrechten & Vluchtelingen: course material for that new subject I teach (project general subjects :P) on human rights and refugees.
- The Graveyard Book (Neil GAIMAN), as a comfort prize for seeing the entire Sandman Chronicles being way too expensive for me. Booh.
- The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy & Other Stories (Tim BURTON) as a present for my sister.
- Vrolijk Kerstfeest, Ollie! is a book about Christmas for my godson Thian. Why did I buy it?

Best five movie characters ever

Empire Magazine has a Hundred Best Movie Characters feature on the blocks, and is asking people to write in their top five. Guess what? It's really hard!

I had started out thinking I'd just fill it in, but it soon turned out I had no idea where to start. I wanted to nominate Stanley Kowlaski from A Streetcar Named Desire, but is that what they mean with 'best movie character'? Because really, what stands out about Stanley isn't really the character but the amazing performance by Marlon Brando.
Then I figured maybe I had to focus on a character, and I came up with Edward Scissorhands, but I'm not a big fan of the movie. It's a very original and unique creation, but so is Jack Sparrow. Should I nominate Jack Sparrow?
Then I came up with Travis Bickle from Taxi Driver. But is he a character, or an idea? There's no actual emotion to Travis, he's like a philosophical concept let loose in a movie.
And I'd also like to put in some women, but I can't really think of any - how ironic is that?

Yes, I know, same old same old

So, it's that time again where I show my complete immaturity by being confused by internet cruelty. Actually, this time around, I really don't get it. There's a Belgian news site where I get most of my daily news off (which is in Dutch, hence no links), and as I am known to have rather strong opinions, sometimes I'll comment on an article or (most often) on a comment. I've tried to be more civil lately, because apparently I came across as arrogant and stuff. Because that's totally me.
So now I had made this really harmless comment about Horkheimer and Adorno's theory on modernity, just as a parallel with capitalism, actually. And this guy (who doesn't like me because I said something about Christopher Hitchins (who sucks) based on a faulty translation and also because I'm a catholic, which apparently is really normal these days) responds with 'Oh well, they suck' and some comments on the Wiener Kreis and stuff. And I'm all 'WTF? Wiener Kreis?!' and so I refresh my course on philosophy of language and I reply with 'Yeah, well, my comment wasn't about the WK or their vision on science and methodology, just on, you know, capitalism' and he goes 'You know shit' (this is all the abbreviated version, of course) and I'm all 'Eh?'
And then he goes 'blah blah science' so I ask 'Before I waste my time posting a long reply, what do you mean with science?' which I think is a legitimate question. I mean, I like to know what I'm talking about, I like to have clear terms and definitions and stuff. And he's all 'If this were a chess game I would bow out gracefully'. What the fuck?
And then this woman he apparently knows is all over me because I said I don't like sociobiology and I figured it was still a theory, and so it could still be wrong; because she was all 'Yeah it's true, accept it'. It's not, right? It's still a theory? It was back in 1998 anyway. And then she goes and mocks me because I'm young. Wtf?
So I guess I'll just not post anymore there. But hey. I should grow up and get over this shit. I guess that's just the part of me that still feels like stupid little Elke who started at uni and didn't know Greek or any big words and never goes to the opera - like I cheated my way through uni, but really I'm stupid and I shouldn't have passed. Sometimes that part of me rears its head. Well, a lot.
Pfft. Sucks.

Also: I have to stop worrying about my internet brilliance. I mean, I'm not the smartest person in the room. That's okay! It's fine! I'm great! *groans* If anyone knows a store where they sell self-esteem in little bottles, pretty please send me the address?

Also: There's this awesome telenovella I'm following, called LouisLouise, which is about a man who gets transformed into a woman after a bad date/dump moment, and he tries to pick up his life as a woman... It's actually about as lame as it sounds, BUT it has two great things going for it: the lead actress who is divine, and the side plot with the awesome man who is a soft and gentle dad (who, I'm sure, will turn out to have been a woman once) is really nice. Which shows just how extremely low I've sunk in the entertainment category.
Speaking of which: there's a new Elizabeth George! Yeay! With angst!Lynley! Yeay! I've bought it, am currently reading it, am loving it. Awesomeness.

Also (that's the last one, I swear): the coworker from last year's school who can stay while I couldn't? She texted me today, really sweet, that my seat still isn't taken. (I always sat at the head of the big table where all the uncool young teachers sat). That was incredibly sweet of her. I do miss them so, so much. And I saw a student I had last year, she graduated and started in Antwerp. She looked really happy, so that was very nice.

Yes, I have once again been reduced to that level of 'articulate' which borders on 'caveman eloquence' but really is just 'Homer drooling over donut'. Seriously, my life sucks. (Sorry, life, I only mean that in the best possibly way). Leaving school yesterday, I had a great but busy weekend to look forward to: having dinner with ex-colleagues on Friday night in a very good restaurant, doing some shopping and cleaning on Saturday, and helping out at the Big Band concert my landlord organized on Sunday. Instead, I'm stuck at home with a twisted ankle.
I HATE BEING FAT.
See, there's a double problem there (actually, tripple, because by most people's standards I'm not as much fat as 'overweight', apparently, where most people seem to miss that 'overweight' is a eufemism for fat, but hey):
1. Because I'm fat, there's too much weight crushing my tiny ankle bones. I'm actually a small person: I have small hands, small feet, small wrists and ankles, small eyes, small teeth... Everything about me is small except my size. So I really need to loose weight to take the pressure off my joints. However...
2. I can only lose weight if I excercise. This requires... putting extra strain on my ankles. AAAAAH.
See the problem there?

To top things, I've got the mother-in-law of all colds, so I'm constantly sniffling and coughing, my hearing is dulled and I have no sense of smell. That last thing is actually really positive: I'm kind of not attracted to bad food anymore, because I simply don't smell it. It's surprising how unappealing chocolate becomes when it smells a bit like snot.

All that said, I bought a DVD box of Numbers, which is a detective series with a genious mathematecian (I bought it because it was ridiculously cheap for a box) so I'll probably watch that all weekend and wallow on self-pity while doing it; not eating Ben & Jerry's for a change because my mom is going to have to do my shopping, and she'll only bring healthy diety things.

Oh well, kids in Africa are far worse off than me, and all that.

Oh, big second side-note: Jörg Haider is dead! That's of course sad for Haider's friends and relatives, not to mention Haider himself (considering where he's going). However, Haider's a neo-fascist bastard, and the less of those we have around, the better. I've already been saying for about a decade now that I don't like the direction Europe is going (further to the right) and most people just chalk that up to me being a socialist, but the truth is that when people like Haider gain actual credibility, there's something rotten in the state of Denmark, if you catch my drift. (If not, read the bard!)

I got a job! It's 16 hours of religion, general and technic (ASO and BSO for the Belgians), en they're going to try to give me some history or PAV (that's a general course in professional (BSO) education). It's in a smaller school close to home, where my cousin goes. YEAY!

On another note, my dad's chemo starts today.
